The comfort of being in the steam room after the steam has been prepared by the bathhouse attendant
Built, as reported, in 1808 with the money obtained from selling a gift given to the founder's wife by Catherine the Great, Sanduny has entered the public consciousness as a place without whose visit a self-respecting person "has not been to Moscow." To enter the highest grade, the bathhouse attendant must ascend a baroque staircase curved like a shell and enter a Gothic hall, where under a high ceiling of black wood, men in bath togas rest on sofas arranged in neat rows. In this grade, there are 2 steam rooms where every 2 hours, the bathhouse attendants prepare new, fragrant, and soft steam that delicately warms without scalding the body. For a better effect, one can order steaming (for 3,500 rubles) and a massage (for at least 2,700 rubles), but it's advisable to take care of this in advance due to the high demand for these specialists. After the steam, the flushed men cool down under 3 barrels of ice water, in one of the two wooden bath-tubs, or swim leisurely in the antique pool. In other grades, the setting is simpler and there is no pool, but there too, the steam is famed for its softness, attracting Russian celebrities, business tycoons, politicians, and the intellectually inclined who don't count their money, for three centuries now.
